The cupcake bakery trend has come to Hattiesburg.  You may recall New York City’s boutique cupcake bakeries getting some attention a few years ago.  Remember Magnolia Bakery featured in Sex and the City and Lazy Sunday on SNL? Since then, many cities have seen cupcake joints cropping up, and we now have a great one in Hattiesburg.  Having been to the much-lauded Magnolia Bakery, I can say that ours takes the cake.  The cupcakes at Cirque du Sweet Day are more moist and flavorful.  Cirque du Sweet Day has a wide variety of cupcakes with enticing flavors like Cookies and Cream, Velvet Rouge, and Turtle.  They also have chocolates, brownies, and cookies.  There are over 30 variations of cupcakes in total of which about a dozen were available when I visited.  They are the perfect size and, at $2.25 each, make an affordable and fun snack.  The decor is super cute. Great place to end a movie date or to treat the kids after a special day at school.  Hours are 12pm-10pm every day except Thursday and Sunday when they are closed.  Cirque du Sweet Day is located at 3602 Hardy Street.

T-Bones MuralT-Bone’s Records and Coffee Shop, your favorite independent record store and live music joint, is now serving lunch seven days a week.  There’s a good selection of grilled sandwiches, think panini, added to their already great coffee menu.  It’s a really fun atmosphere with great tunes, funky art, board games, and lots of music, including vinyl, to browse.  While, yes, the place has a super cool vibe, it’s friendly enough that anyone would feel at home.  It’s quick enough for your lunch hour and comfy enough to plug in your laptop and stay all afternoon.

Sandwich 2

I enjoyed the Moo-siana roast beef sandwich and my husband had the club which he said was ”crazy good.”   I also had a Harry’s Cold Brew which is, in my humble opinion, the best iced coffee in town.  Check it out.  T-Bone’s Records & Coffee is located at 2101 Hardy Street.

Note:  I said they serve lunch, that’s true, but their kitchen is also open for supper.  M-Th until 8, F-Sa until 9, and Su until 7.

The Depot Front Door

The other morning the bebé and I strolled down to the new coffee shop, The Depot.  Lovely building.  Though we were strolling, I noticed the plentiful, easy parking.  The staff are friendly.  There are lots of good regular coffee choices as well as yummy sounding espresso drinks.  I had the day’s bold roast, and it was very good.  The young proprietor seems passionate about good coffee, and theirs is fair trade coffee roasted in New Orleans which means fresh beans.  While there for the coffee, I was tempted by some enormous sour cream biscuits.  Yes, please!  They were soft, rich, and craveable–worth the trip even if you don’t do coffee.  This intrepid reviewer even managed to try the bThe Depot patioiscuits again a couple of days later just to, you know, check the consistency of the product.  All in a day’s work.  One embarrassingly small note:  The biscuit experience would have been even more perfect with some better jam.  The generic strawberry was ok, but some nicer jam would have been, er, nicer.

Large coffee and even larger biscuit was less than $4.  Very reasonable.    If you’d like some great local coffee, give The Depot a try.  Just go early–they’ve been known to sell out of those sour cream biscuits.

The Depot Coffee House and Sweet Shop is located at 127 Bushman Street.
